We’ve previously discussed Nanny Job Duties and Responsibilities. In this article, we will cover how much a nanny costs, typical nanny pay rates, and nanny compensation in South Florida.

Let’s start with the basics.

Depending on the area you live, the nanny pay rate and typical expectations can change. The area we call South Florida includes Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties. This includes cities like Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, and Miami. There may be some fluctuation between these counties and cities. Our placement team can help guide you further on your area’s specifics. In the next section, we’ll go over nanny salaries and compensation in South Florida.

Nanny Pay Rates in South Florida

You may ask yourself, “how much does a nanny cost?” Competitive pay rates are based on a combination of a Nanny’s verified childcare experience as well as the family’s job requirements. In South Florida, we currently see families offering rates ~$20-30+ per hour for Nannies with more than 3 years of recent, non-family-member, long-term, private duty Nanny experience. For qualified, professional nannies, our agency recommends a window of $25-35 per hour on average depending on number of children and duties required.

That salary range is a sliding scale based on the city and the job itself. Some families have more/less children, have special needs requirements, or require cooking, housekeeping, errands, etc. Or, the family may require the Nanny to have higher education, work nights/weekends, have emergency availability, work flexible or extended hours, perform light housekeeping, be able to drive, provide household management. Each factor affects the rate of pay.

Families that offer more competitive salaries tend to attract more motivated and qualified Nannies. Families that offer less than $25 per hour may attract good candidates but they may not have the same level of experience, and/or education.

And, if you’re not sure what pay range would be competitive based on your needs, call Kensington for advice.

Pay consistency is also VERY important.

Virtually all Nannies count on consistent earnings each week. Compensation goes beyond the simple notion of how much a nanny costs. If possible, offering a consistent weekly salary will help to attract more candidates. You may think if you go out of town you don’t need to pay your nanny. However, this can lead to poor retention and high turnover. Nannies are people too and thus have their own bills and expenses which they depend on their jobs to cover (especially full time jobs.) Take a Holistic Approach to Nanny Hiring

Lastly, attracting qualified candidates depends not just on the salary, but on the full-picture of the job you’re creating. For example, your job may have a competitive rate of $28/hr for one child, age 3-year-old. However, if schedule is uncommon (not typical 9-5) the hours, for example, are 5am-7am and 6pm-8pm, Monday-Sunday then you’re going to have a difficult time finding reliable candidates. You will need to increase the rate to motivate the candidates. It’s important to consider all of the following factors when trying to attract great nannies:

  • Work Schedule and availability
  • Job Duties, will you require duties beyond childcare, like family meal prep, grocery shopping, or housekeeping?
  • Number of children and their ages
  • Child’s activities or school schedule
  • Compensation Package: salary, PTO, bonuses, holidays, sick days, etc.
  • Specialized skill requirements such as special needs, tutoring, twins or triplets.
